And these were promptly gone by the time of this posting - just a few days after purchasing - from one very happy set of play-date friends!!! This is a favorite for everyone!!! |
Have you tried these Got Milk - Magic Milk Flavoring Straws? Filled with tiny little flavor beads, the straws are perfect for enhancing milk of any kind... soy, cow, goat, almond, etc.. At only 4 carbs each, my kids get a little extra treat and safer blood sugars overnight (one of the best times for a glass of milk) from the combination of protein and sugar. Each packet comes with five straws and costs about $1.99, although, our Target store did have a price drop back in December for $1.49.
The label picture is a little fuzzy, but the ingredients are simple with sugar, cocoa powder, glucose syrup, water, dextrose and chocolate flavor for the Chocolate version. For the strawberry, it is merely sugar, glucose syrup, dextrose, strawberry flavoring and black carrot juice concentrate. Not too bad for a little treat!
We love cranberry juice! While I am pretty open about selecting items, I do prefer to make most of our beverages carb free. Mostly for two reasons. The first reason is that I want my kids to stay hydrated and keep those kidneys working properly, hence choosing cranberry as it is a natural infection fighter! The second reason is that most beverages tend to be calorie laden and carbohydrate heavy. I would rather the girls have "free" drinks and not worry about bolusing.
Unless of course, the girls are having a low blood sugar. Then, a full sugar and carb-heavy beverage is exactly the thing to reach for to help bring their blood sugar back up.
Our current favorite low blood sugar and full sugar juice - Juicy Juice 100% Juice. The cap is the best because we can save the remaining and refrigerate until needed. |
Disclaimer Alert: These are just my personal opinions and do not mean that I think anyone who chooses otherwise is doing something wrong.
So imagine my surprise when I came across the Diet OceanSpray Cranberry Juice. Sold in a four pack for about $3.99, it is the perfect go-to drink when your child wants a juice. Only 5 carbs each, the bottle fits neatly into a lunch box and even has a screw on lid for convenient storage. We all agreed that it didn't taste like a diet drink but instead like full flavor cranberry. Delish.
Now in case you do not want to give your child a diet drink, we also have been purchasing Cranberry pills.
These came right out of my cupboard, but I think we bought them at a local pharmacy store. The pills are great as they have zero carbohydrates and can be taken with a full 8 ounce glass of water for the same benefit as cranberry juice.
The downside is that the pills are kind of large.
My girls have learned to take them, but it still requires a lot of time and patience to get them to want to. Just seeing the size brings a little bit of panic and drama until after the pills are swallowed and then, it is a full out victory dance for how grown up they are!
In the end, I think it best to have choices and that is part of the fun of Fresh Food Friday... bringing many choices to your home.
Bon Appetite!

I love Target! I could hang out there all day, I swear.
The people watching isn't as interesting as at WalMart, but WalMart generally stresses me out. Usually calls for a Target run just to calm down again. Hehehe!
Our WalMart is scary! Even people watching takes on a new level of terror. You're a brave man, Scott!
