November is National Diabetes Awareness Month

Today kicks off the start of National Diabetes Awareness Month.

And yes, the irony of the day after Halloween is fully on my mind.

INSERT SMALL RANT:  For the record, THIS IS NOT BECAUSE OF THE CANDY!!!  I feel like that should be one of my clarity points because if uneducated, half of the world is going to start talking about the epidemic of childhood obesity and the uptick in the number of newly diagnosed children living with (type 2) diabetes.  Although the type 2 part will be left out and there is a chance, that it will be thought to be all kinds of diabetes.  Which it isn't.  Type 1 diabetes is an auto-immune disease which still has no clear cause nor any cure.  In short, we did nothing to get this and now we can't fix it.

The importance of having a month that is fully dedicated to our cause of improving treatments for T1d AND developing a cure is critical.

This is the month where we, together as a community of people living with T1d and people who are not diagnosed but love us, come together in one loud voice to say, 'ENOUGH!  WE WANT TO END THIS THING!  #NOT1D !" and make a change.

What can you do?  Talk.  Share. Point a spotlight at the reasons why this is important to your family.

This is a big year for us.  Treatments that we need are waiting for FDA approval.  The work that JDRF has done with cell transplants are incredible and potentially, the most promising that we have ever seen for a cure.

Imagine that!  Your voice can help to make it happen.

And when it does, I will be the first one to say thank you.

Let's do it!
